Artist Spotlight – Daniel Govar Of Dynamite's Grimm

Daniel Govar works for Marvel and Dynamite, does a web comic called Relaunch with Rod Perazza and did the Zuda/DC comic Azure. In between that he hits the convention circuit hard doing commissions and convention sketches. We turn the spotlight on this very hard working artist to get to know him a bit better.

BLEEDING COOL: How did you get started drawing?

DANIEL GOVAR: Professionally – about 10 years ago – Mostly covers and concept art for video games. But I always loved comics and sequential art. I did a couple of award-winning animations for the SciFi Channel (now SyFy), and in 2009 I submitted and won DC Comic's ZUDA competition for my comic AZURE that was published for 2 seasons. Since then – I've been doing work for a variety of publishers.

DG: That's a tough one. I think we're influenced by everything we see, but in terms of comics art – Charles Vess, Mike Kaluta, Moebius, Bill Sienkiewicz, Art Adams, Travis Charest, Marc Silvestri, etc. Outside of comics and long gone – Mucha, DaVinci, Rembrandt, Rodin…

DG: For traditional work I can do a finished inked page and a half a day. Digital I'm a bit faster at about 2 pages a day. This tends to vary if I'm doing ink washes, (such as what we did for Grimm). Each project is a little different, and my process on Grimm was to first do loose pencil work based on the scripts – a little more developed than layouts but not quite as refined as finished pencils. We chose to approach the art with a Next I did straight line art once the pencils were approved and then moved on to washes to create textures and more nuanced lighting. For the digital version of Grimm, I added effects that change from panel to panel via layered versions of panels.

azure_zuda_00075 azure_zuda_00085BC: Where might folks have seen your work previously?

DG: The easiest work to find is probably my comic AZURE which you can purchase via ComiXology or DC Comics apps. Aside from that, I have a webcomic called RELAUNCH which you can find through my personal site as well as ComiXology.

DE_Grimm_04_cover_sm DE_Grimm_03_01_smBC: What are you working on now?

DG: Currently I'm working on a creator-owned comic – a horror/scfi tale. I just wrapped a scifi one-shot for another publisher. I'm also doing layouts for many of Marvel's Infinite comics, and I am the cover artist for an anthology series called Off-Registration.

DE_Grimm_03_02_sm DE_Grimm_06_01_smBC: What is your dream project?

DG: I'm a big fan of Fantasy and SciFi genres – existing properties I would leap to work on – Red Sonja, Conan, XO-Manowar, any of the Xbooks. I have a couple of my own I've been working on when I have down-time. I think my dream project changes though from year to year. For the last few years I think adapting Naomi Novik's Temeraire series of historical fantasy novels to a graphic novel format, has been my dream project.
