"Everything Has Gotten Very Serious, Very Gritty And Very Adult" – Spooky Sleepover

Dave Scheidt writes for Bleeding Cool:

photo 3Spooky Sleepover is a collection of 3 funny all ages horror stories perfect for spooky readers of all ages!

I grew up reading comic books, even before I could actually read. My dad has been a lifelong reader and has always had them laying around the house. He would let me stay up late and watch monster movies with him and let me read all his comics.  I was hooked from the start!

Comics have been something that I have grown to love more and more as I got older. At some point around 5 or so years ago I decided to write my own comics. Comics have changed so much over the years which has been really good to see it expand so much but even though I read them, I do believe we have lost sight of aiming for all types of readers with mainstream comics. Don't get me wrong I still read quite a bit of Big Two books and I understand the industry changes and stories evolve but everything has gotten very serious, very gritty and very "adult".

photo 1I think as creators we owe it to a younger generation of readers to put as much thought and passion into our comics for them as we do with the comics we create for older readers. All ages comics are exactly that, comics that can be read by children, parents, high schoolers, the elderly, EVERYONE!

Spooky Sleepover my latest project with Jess Smart Smiley is exactly that. It's a collection of funny horror stories that I honestly think people of all ages can enjoy. Jess's art is big and bright and mind-numbingly sweet while I feel like my writing is funny enough to appeal to older readers as well. I always set out to write something that I would want to read and this book is 100% pure joy for me to write. I believe the joy Jess and I have making this book is infectious to readers and they'll pick up on the fact that we love what we have done here.

photo 2We want kids and parents and friends to be able to share something like Spooky Sleepover and have a ton of fun reading it. We want to scare them, make them laugh and we want to inspire them.

Comics are truly evolving and it's up to all of us on how that plays out. My name is Dave Scheidt and I write comic books and nothing makes me happier.

Here is the kickstarter.
