Saga #20 Is Headed For New Territory

Let's all just take a moment to applaud Brain K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples for their wonderful abilities to start so many issues of Saga off with a scene that makes your eyes pop out of your head. His expressive words with her inventive designs continue to wow me.

Now that issue #20 of Saga is out, I'd say it's safe to mention what happened at the end of issue #19. Hazel's narration, always providing us with that extra twist, reveals that her parents, Marko and Alana, are going to split up. This was very upsetting and shocking to me. I even mentioned in my review of issue #19 that I hoped it was some kind of sick joke. The reason I bring this up now, is because it becomes very clear in the current issue that their relationship might actually be headed in that direction. After reading #20 I'm getting the feeling that the plot and characters are headed toward new territory.

In some aspects this is a good thing, because the story is constantly keeping us on our toes. Vaughn has a way of building up a suspenseful plot and adding a twist more shocking than anything we could have expected. We find out what Prince IV has been up to, and what's going on with his Princess and new baby as well. On the other hand, some new territory worries me. Characters that we thought we knew are beginning to demonstrate behavior that will most likely be problem causing in the future. Alana and Marko both dabble in some questionable behavior in this issue. It's as if there's a giant dark cloud looming over their relationship and it's only a matter of time before it starts to downpour.

If Vaughn's intention was to give Saga readers a breath of fresh anticipation, he did an excellent job. The ending of this issue left me very curious for what's to come in the fantastic world of Saga. Needless to say, the cliffhanger is epic.
