Still Not Over Saga #19

By Christine Marie Vinciquarra

[*Spoilers for Saga #19 below!]

robot son birth

Remember that feeling you got when you opened your first issue of Saga and witnessed the birth of Hazel? It was definitely an explosive way to start a series. Issue 19 of Saga starts off with a similar situation, except instead of a tiny horned baby being born, it's a baby with a TV for a head. That's right. Princess Robot gives birth to a baby boy. I've mentioned in previous posts that I'm not a huge fan of the Robot Kingdom, but I have decided that my dislike is really for Prince IV. I definitely shouldn't hold the entire kingdom accountable for his strangeness. I hope to learn more about the other characters in upcoming issues so I can form a better opinion about them. While the main focus has really been on "The Family," Hazel's narration at the beginning of this issue gives us a little more background on the Robot Kingdom, and the struggles they have within their own society.

While one family is beginning, another is starting over. The story continues to the planet Gardenia. This is where Hazel is spending her toddler years, while Alana and Marko figure out how to function in a normal society. It becomes very obvious that this is not an easy task for them, and it definitely causes tension. Their journey to protect their daughter is still underway, but they are both forced to swallow a big dose of reality. The life they imagined isn't turning out exactly the way they planned. Thank god for Izabel's comic relief.

I really wasn't happy with the way this issue ended. I'm kind of hoping it's a sick joke that Vaughan is playing on us, but that really is the beauty of Hazel's narration. We are able to hear about things that haven't happened yet, which can sometimes be heart-wrenching and make you yell, "Seriously?! Come on…" Maybe that was just me. None the less I am looking forward to the next issue which releases June 25th.

Saga #19 from Image Comics is written by Brian K. Vaughan, with art by Fiona Staples.
