Brainslug – A Hilarious And Surprisingly Violent Comic Series

André-Guy Landry writes for Bleeding Cool:

Brainslug is a hilarious, and surprisingly violent, comic series about two kids and their homicidal pet bunny. "Alien Tongues" is the first of three currently completed Brainslug books and the first to be launched into the world of print.

Correction, I started it because I wanted to make myself laugh — The fact that other people laughed too just happened to be a happy coincidence.

Sometimes, I find it a little weird that I ended up making a comic. My main interest in comics started and ended with Bill Watterson's "Calvin and Hobbes". That could either mean that I'm very devout; or that I really should be reading more. But for the sake of argument, today we'll go with "devout" instead of "functionally illiterate".

Not that "Calvin and Hobbes" isn't a fantastic comic to look up to, it's just that people who end up deciding to make comics are usually better versed on the subject.

That's probably why Brainslug is what it is. It doesn't really fit into any category or specific "style" of comics. It could best be described as a hybrid between a graphic novel and a traditional newspaper comic strip. Originally conceived as a web comic, it was important for me to have every page be able to stand alone, each with their own jokes and punch lines. But I also wanted them to have an overarching story. Plotlines that had clear starts and ends that could later be combined as books.

So I guess what I'm admitting is that I've been making it as I go along, for the past ten years. I never really had a plan. It was an idea and a desire to make people laugh as the idea developed. It's grown and evolved into directions that I never even expected it to go myself. And after all this time, three complete books and tons of standalone comics, I still love every minute of it.

Brainslug had never been a money-making venture or ever been profitable in any way. I've always done it for the entertainment of myself and the fans. But with this many books now done, I'm ready to take the next step and try to see how the world outside the internet will accept "Brainslug". For that, I need to get the books printed and I need to go make my way to larger comic conventions to promote and sell them. Starting with the first book "Alien Tongues" and followed up shortly after with the sequel "Road Trip" and the prequel to the series "The Origin of Dante".

Alien Tongues

In "Alien Tongues", The Lance, Alex and Dante suddenly find themselves in the middle of an alien invasion that has taken control of everyone in their town. Things turn out to be not exactly what they seem as they work to unravel what is happening and they try to rid themselves of the alien parasites. It's the unlikely mash-up of an alien invasion story and a zombie movie featuring aliens, explosions, a dead bird, unnecessary violence and a talking pie.

Road Trip

"Road Trip" takes place immediately after the events of "Alien Tongues" as our heroes deal with the aftermath of the events of "Alien Tongues". A misunderstanding which they discover to be an even bigger threat to the survival of their home than the aliens were. It's a road-trip and car chase story involving an RV, the army, lots of weapons, a fat camp for the criminally insane, an angry talking pie and a corpse golem.

The Origin of Dante

In "The Origin of Dante", we travel 4 years before the events of "Alien Tongues" to tackle the universal question of  "How does an evil, homicidal, alien rabbit end up on earth, living with and posing as the pet bunny of a couple of children?" And in true Brainslug fashion, cannibals somehow get involved.

But that's looking ahead to the future releases of Brainslug. For now, we need to start at the beginning, and that's with a print run of the first book "Alien Tongues" that I hope to fund and ship to supporters via my kickstarter campaign.

Fortunately, with the help of Bleeding Cool reader support, the campaign can make Brainslug happen in an even greater way!

My original, very modest goal was to raise enough money for the print run of "Alien Tongues" alone. But because I have so much faith in the readers here, I've added a new stretch goal of $9500 that would allow me to not only to print "Alien Tongues" but also "The Origin of Dante" which would be included with all rewards levels that include "Alien Tongues".

The reason "The Origin of Dante" is the second book to be offered is simply because it's the one that's closest to being ready to print. Whereas "Road Trip" needs editing and color before being ready for release.

And as another extra bonus, these copies of "The Origin of Dante" will feature a variant cover by a close personal friend of mine, Marvel Comics artist: Nick Bradshaw. (Wolverine and the X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy)

So there you have it, all this because I simply wanted to make people laugh.
