Things To Do In New York This Week If You Like Comics

Tuesday, May 6th

On Tuesday, May 6th, from 6-8pm, there will be an SVA Senior Illustration and Cartoon Open Studio night by students of the School of Visual Arts. The event will be held at 310 East 22 Street on the 7th Floor. This is a one night showing of work by the senior Illustration and Cartooning students and is open to the public. Refreshments will be served and students will be selling their work.

Wednesday, May 7th

A special meeting of the NY Comics & Picture-story Symposium will be held on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 8:00 PM at  The New School,  66 West 12th Street, Room A407. This event is free and open to the public. (*Please note the change of usual meeting day)

The presentation will be by Antonin Baudry on his recent book Weapons of Mass Diplomacy. Antonin Baudry is the author of the award-winning graphic novel Weapons of Mass Diplomacy (illustrated by Christophe Blain) and will discuss his bestselling satire of Franco-American relations in the lead up to the Iraq War. Baudry, who is Cultural Counselor at the French Embassy in New York, will discuss the genesis of the book (published in France as Quai D'Orsay), which draws on his experiences an advisor to former French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin. He will talk about the motivations behind his satire of diplomatic life and why he chose to write it in comic book form.

Wednesday, May 7th

Carmine Street Comics, at 34 Carmine Street in New York, will host Chris Pyrate's Feral NYC Kickstarter Showcase from 5-8PM. They say: "If you liked the pop-science book/TV special The World Without Us and comics like Garth Ennis' Rover Red Charlie you'll LOVE Feral NYC a post-apocalyptic tale of animals both familiar and unfamiliar fighting for survival! Come by the store Wednesday May 7th for a special art sale to promote Chris Pyrate's ambitious comic project currently on Kickstarter! Buy some art- meet the man, the myth, the comicsmith himself- and have some fun!"

Forbidden Planet NYC at 832 Broadway in New York will host a "Mega Signing" from 6 to 8PM featuring James Tynion IV, Amy Chu, Larry Hama, Marguerite Bennet, Alitha Martinez, Morgan O'Shay, and possibly even more creators to celebrate the launch of James Tynion IV & Michael Dialynas new comic The Woods from BOOM! Studios. They will also be celebrating the release of issue #1 of the Vertigo Comics anthology CMYK and IDW Publishing horror anthology In the Dark

Thursday, May 8th

Cloonan-signing

Midtown Comics Downtown at 64 Fulton Street in New York will be hosting a signing from 6 to 7PM by writer Shaun Simon and artist Becky Cloonan of The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys TP which is released on Wednesday this week from Dark Horse Comics.
