How Marvel Comics Will Be Piling On The Orders For Original Sin #1

Original Sin #1, out in April, is getting a push from Marvel for retailers to up their orders. Big time.

The Watcher, the mysterious space-god who's been watching us from the moon for as long as we can remember… is dead. Thus begins the greatest murder mystery in Marvel Comics history.

As Nick Fury leads the heroes of the Marvel Universe in an investigation, other forces are marshaling as well and other questions are arising. Why is Black Panther gathering a secret team of his own, including Emma Frost, the Punisher and Dr. Strange? Who is the Unseen? What was the Original Sin? What was stolen from the Watcher's lair? And most importantly, who now holds the Marvel Universe's darkest secrets in the palm of their hand?

Marvel is encouraging retailers to order 300% of their order of Avengers #25 on issue 1 of Original Sin to get an extra 15% discount on the book, which effectively gives many retailers a third off their cost of ordering the comic.

There are smaller discounts for smaller numbers, but if everyone went along with Marvel's suggestion, Avengers #25 had an estimated North America sale figure of 65,591, which probably is around 75,000 once non-North American sales are added. So Original Sin #1 could have orders of 225,000.

Not every retailer will choose to order so quite so many, however. But they will have plenty of other incentives to do so as well. There's a Launch Party variant for any retailers who participate in ordering the Original Sin launch promotions, a 1:10 Teaser Variant cover, a 1:50 variant by Gabriele Dell'Otto

A blank sketch variant cover that can be ordered on top of any normal covers that reach 150% of Avengers #25 and a Deadpool variant the same… and a Skottie Young cover that can be ordered on top of any normal covers that reach 200% of Avengers #25…

And its not just the covers. If retailers order 1200 copies they will get three bundles of these…  or one bundle if you order 175% of orders for Avengers #25.

But it's not just the retailers that Marvel are reaching out to. They are also talking to readers, or potential readers, promising that,

Original Sin is set to reach new and current audiences in 2014 thanks to vast social media outreach, new levels of targeted web and video advertising, radio campaigns, television placements including Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Declassified and other high-profile press estimated to be seen and heard by millions of potential consumers…

Original Sin and the associated tie-ins will also be featured in special fold out insert ads running in top circulating Marvel publications from April through September. Special in-store marketing collateral will also be provided including postcards, a special in-store promotional trailer and more…
