Thursday Runaround – Justice Lag Of America

Okay, in a few hours I'm off to the red carpet for the British Captain America premiere. I know you folk had one first in the States this time, but now it's our turn. And I promise not to jump the turnstile, dodging security guards to pin a spoiler on a star's chest as I did last time. Okay? Good. So what's going around?

SLIPPING AWAY

We mentioned yesterday how Forever Evil and Nightwing were slipping further, now it appears Justice League Of America #14 has joined them as Forever Evil has gotten later and later. This is known as the Civil War effect…

THE GUINNESS BOOK OF COSPLAY

Washington DC's Comic Con hopes to beat the world record for the largest gathering of people dressed as comic book characters. The current record to beat is 1,530 and was set in China on April 19, 2011.

Awesome Con organizers and the Museum of Science Fiction, a yet-to-open D.C. museum, are organizing the costumed gathering and hope to break a Guinness world record.'

HAPPY EISNER DAY

The city of Portland celebrates Comic legends Will Eisner's birthday every year. The Portland festivities began last Wednesday and continued on until Friday. Speakers at the event included Matt Wagner and Diana Schutz.

Will Eisner has been gone for more than nine years, but his message — about comics and storytelling — is still empowering.  "The sky is not falling," Eisner told the Dark Horse staff during a 2000 visit to Milwaukie.  "Our problem is not to allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by the technology, the change in the transmission of information.

"Society still needs stories to tell us how to deal with life.  Essential storytelling — communicating heartbreak — will remain."

CATWOMANWALK

San-Diego kicks off the very first comic-con fashion show. It includes a full fledged fashion show as well as design competition. The sci-fi fashion apparel line Her Universe has teamed up with Nerdist Industries to bring ''geek couture'' to the convention being held on July 24.

"Fangirls are already using the halls of San Diego Comic-Con International as their runway to showcase custom fashions," said Her Universe founder Ashley Eckstein in a statement. "We wanted to give these designers a bigger stage to share their talent and also provide an educational experience in the fashion industry."

TINTIN AND THE MALAYSIAN PLANE DISAPPEARANCE

Many have heard of the mystery revolving around the Malaysian plane lost flying overseas. But what about its resemblance to comic Tintin written in 1968.

"Investigators probing the loss of the Malaysia Airlines aircraft, which went missing more than a week ago with 239 passengers aboard, have been left startled by the similarity to a 1968 Tintin adventure.

In the comic strip, called Flight 714, Tintin is aboard a jet in the Far East that is hijacked by the pilots and brought to a deserted volcanic island."

FRANK SPEAKING

In the light of BBC4 airing the documentary on a day in his working life, Frank Quitely addresses his fans… and critics.

"Oh, you know," he laughs, a lot of people love my style, and a lot hate it. Comic fans are an unusually vocal population."

Thanks to Macey Lavoie for the assist.
