Comics And Cosplay Con-umentary Special – Spring Fest NYC In Brooklyn!

Ian Mageto, Bleeding Cool's Senior Cosplay Correspondent and Comics and Cosplay host writes:

With every convention trying to become mega, colossal, or super nova, it is nice to attend an old fashion convention hosted by a small collegiate anime club. Spring Fest is a two day convention in Brooklyn hosted by NYU Polytechnic School. What it lacks in big name guests and vendors, it makes up for it in communal charm and energy.

My only complaint was the disorganized nature of the badge check system. At every turn attendees were required to show their badge and frequently multiple times on the same floor. While I understand that a convention needs to prevent unpaid entry, a more efficient system could easily be implemented.

While the Spring Fest had many of the normal features of an anime con, two in particular really stood out. First was the Pokemon DS tournament room and lounge. In the lounge, Nintendo DS owners could meet and challenge others to a game of Pokemon X/Y. It was by far the most popular rooms. The second stand out feature was the dedicated cosplay photography room. Cosplayers were able to get high quality portrait taken of their costume. It was a great meeting area for cosplayers to talk and swap tips.  I am still amazed that most conventions have not adopted this idea, to help alleviate main floor congestion.

While Spring Fest might never have sellout crowds or big names like New York Comic Con, it is still a necessity in helping grow and nurture the anime community. The lower admission price, smaller attendance numbers, and younger environment make Spring Fest a perfect convention for new and younger attendees. Also parents can feel more confident in letting their children attend the more relaxed and smaller.
