Keeley Hawes Joins Doctor Who As A Sexy Banker Villainess Type, Ms. Delphox

The hairdo and glasses have had a powerful effect on her look, but here’s the always more than watchable Keeley Hawes in her Doctor Who get-up. This is Ms. Delphox.

The BBC issued a statement from Steven Moffat to go with the pic:

Anyone watching Jed Mercurio’s amazing Line of Duty will know that Keeley Hawes is having one hell of year. And now it’s about to get even better as she achieves the greatest villainy yet attempted on Doctor Who: she plays a banker.

Hawes will be appearing in Steve Thompson‘s episode, and will be directed by her Line of Duty collaborator, Douglas MacKinnon. We’re expecting it to be the fifth in the run. Auntie describes the character and scenario thus:

A powerful out of this world character with a dark secret. Travelling across space and time the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and his companion, Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), will come face to face with the mysterious Ms Delphox when they arrive on a strange and puzzling planet.

Hawes had a few words of her own to share:

I am delighted to join Doctor Who and to be working with this incredible team. Ms Delphox is a great character and someone I’ve had a lot of fun playing.

…just the usual. But still, not every guest star gets their own press release. I think the Who team know how beloved Hawes is with certain audiences.

And, yes, I know that fans are already speculating that she might be a new, female incarnation of The Master. Other folk have namedropped the Rani. Personally… I can’t even see the end of a thread to grasp, let along picture it unravelling in this way. I see no evidence to suggest that there’s any more to Ms. Delphox than evil banking villainy than “Well, I guess there might be.”
