Beer: Game of Thrones: Take the Black Stout

Brewery: Brewery Ommegang

Brewery Ommegang has teamed up with HBO to create a line of beers based off of the hit series Game of Thrones. A friend kindly enough gave me a bottle of the latest beer, Take the Black Stout, as a birthday gift. Adorned with artwork depicting the Weirwood Tree, Take the Black Stout is notably brewed with star anise and licorice root.

When poured, it produces a thick head that lasts. The head itself is tan in color, but the beer is black as the night. The label describes it as "deep, dark and complex, like those who have sworn the oath to defend Westeros" but I found a better comparison to it would be the shadow creature birthed by Melisandre.

Take the Black Stout produces scents of hops, surprisingly, as well as coffee and traces of licorice. When drank, the licorice flavor is almost immediately present. Chocolate and light caramel flavors soon follow. The beer produces a strong aftertaste, with heavy notes of licorice, coffee and what I assume to be the anise. Some hops flavors are also present. On the palate, it is comfortable. The carbonation is present but it is easy to swallow. I would best describe this beer as earthy.

This is the second time that I have tried this beer and I very much enjoyed it more the second go around. Though it is a bit more hoppy and flavorful than a traditional stout, I really like what is happening with the flavors here. On top of all that, it looks beautiful when poured into a stout glass.
