Snowpiercer Authors Discuss The American Cut Of The Film And One Scene In Particular That May Be Taken Out – UPDATED

Snowpiercer We Move ForwardJean-Marc Rochette and Benjamin Legrand, two of the authors of Le Transperceneige, have been speaking to Allo Cine about Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer – the film adaptation of Le Transperceneige – and they commented on the cuts being made to the film for the American release.

I don’t speak French unfortunately, so these quotes are somewhat mangled by Google Translate. Any Little Bleeders who can translate them for me please get in touch. I will update this as soon as I get a better translation.

Jean-Marc Rochette said the following regarding the cuts,

What I understand is that they want to cut early in the psychological presentation of the characters – which is perfect, so I do not see much that can be removed. Violence, they will keep it however, because it does not bother them so the Americans. On the contrary.

He then went further, to mention a scene in particular that may be cut. It’s a spoiler though so only keep scrolling down if you don’t mind being spoiled.

By cons I think they want to cut the scene of the school, because shoot the gun in a school in the United States, hum. More kids are very filthy. It bothers me because it is one of my favorite scenes, but I’m afraid they do not cut it. And so to say .

I would hazard a guess from these quotes that the Weinsteins are presumably fearful that a scene with a school shooting may not play well in America and perhaps cause some controversy. But rather than confront that, deal with it and have that very important conversation the decision instead is to butcher Bong Joon-ho’s film and sweep the scene under the carpet.

As Brendon and I have said many times before, we will let you know as soon as Snowpiercer is available to import. With no American release date announced it’s looking more and more likely that Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer will be out on Blu-ray long before Harvey Scissorhands Weinstein’s Snowpiercer.

UPDATE: Thanks to Kirsty Connell for the following translation of the quotes,

From what I understand, they want to make cuts to the early psychological presentation of the characters – which is perfect, so I don’t see much that can be removed. The violence, they will keep, because it doesn’t bother Americans so much. On the contrary, I think they want to cut the school scene, because to pull a trigger in a school in the United States, well. Besides, the kids are vile. It bothers me because it’s one of my favourite scenes, but I’m afraid they’ll cut it. So that’s that.
