Help Steve Niles' Post-Flood Rebuild In An Ongoing Auction (UPDATE)
On Sunday the 13th of October, the last day of New York Comic Con, fans and friends were shocked to hear the news that comic creator Steve Niles (30 Days of Night, Criminal Macabre, Chin Music, Black Mask Studios) and his wife Monica Richards had experienced a tremendous loss to their personal property when their home in Austin, Texas, was hit by a flash flood. The impact was devastating.
The comics community began to respond immediately on the 13th, trying to set up platforms for donation, and creator Matt Miner (Liberator, a fellow member of Black Mask Studios with Niles) actually set out to collect original art and donations for auction at the con itself. Miner had experienced a home flooding during Hurricane Sandy and realized immediately the overwhelming situation that Niles was facing.
Two sets of auctions were set up whereby 100% of the proceeds, minus ebay fees, would go directly toward helping Niles re-build post-flood. The first round is already underway, but the second round, which started Sunday the 20th, takes in the tide of donations that reached Miner once word started getting around. A wide range of professionals reached out to Miner to express their support, and donated the following:
-Rare signed variants from Greg Pak
-A signed Kraven's Last Hunt HC from JM De Matteis
-One of the NYCC exclusive "Thanos and Darkseid: Carpool Buddies of Doom" comics signed by Justin Jordan and Rafer Roberts
-2 Morbius pages from the artist Valentine De Landro
-2 Start Trek TNG/Doctor Who: Assimilation pages from JK Woodward
-A 30 Days Of Night page by Ben Templesmith donated by IDW EIC Chris Ryall
-Original art from Phil Noto, Joe Mulvey, Kelly Williams, Zak Kinsella, Peter Krause, Dean Trippe
–Ron Marz and Scott Snyder have both donated a script review session for
aspiring comics writers. They'll read a script for an up-to 20 page
comic, critique it, then review it on Skype with the winner (an up to 1 hour session).
There will actually be even more than these lists on auction, and there are still items available from the first round of auctions also. Since the auction started Sunday night, better get in there!

In particular, the auctions are looking for blank sketch cover comics (sketched and signed), variant or show exclusive comics (signed), older or key issue comics (signed), sketched and signed trade paperbacks and hardcovers, abandoned or unsold commissions, as well as original art pages.

We have a long road ahead but as I said everybody is safe and that's all I care about. Somehow knowing all of you are out there makes us feel much safer. It's like we have a thousand personal Batman's waiting to swing in and help us. That's an amazing feeling to have. I'm very proud and humbled by comics and fandom right now. You guys really saved the day and I am forever in your debt.
I love you guys and I will never forget how much you helped us.
There's certainly still plenty to be done to help a comics creator in need through this difficult time, so please keep an eye on the auctions set up by Miner and consider buying items from Niles' store too. It's going to be a long road for them. The auction is already live, but will be updated as items are added to the effort, here.
