Casting Roundup: A Maleficent Swithcheroo, Plus Brie Larson, Blake Lively And More

brie-larson Brie Larson lands a big role (yay!), Blake Lively’s back (yay?) and Javert is Cosette’s father (I knew it) in today’s roundup…

Brie Larson is so happening and I could not be happier. After killing it and breaking out in Short Term 12, the indie actress is catching the eyes of studios and has now entered talks to play the female lead in Rupert Wyatt’s remake of The Gambler, starring Mark Wahlberg as a professor whose secret problem gets out of control. [Deadline]

• So now we know why Maleficent needed reshoots. The teenage version of the Disney villain played by Angelina Jolie for the bulk of the film has switched out its actress. Ella Purnell will now reshoot the opening scenes of the film, replacing what India Eisley shot during principal photography. [Up and Comers]

• The other half of multigenerational family drama Fathers and Daughters has been filled. Amanda Seyfried will play daughter to Russell Crowe in the film set in two time periods 25 years apart, one following dad in the 80s when he’s trying to raise a kid and battle mental illness, and one in present day, when the daughter is still dealing with her troubled childhood. [The Wrap]

Susan Cooper is becoming a full blown Bridesmaids reunion, with Rose Byrne now in early talks to reunite with director Paul Feig and co-star Melissa McCarthy in the spy comedy described as a female 007 potential franchise launcher. Byrne and McCarthy definitely stole the show in Bridesmaids but didn’t get much screentime together, so this is great news – if it ends up panning out. [The Wrap]

• Rom com How to Make Love Like an Englishman has added The OC alum Ben McKenzie to co-star opposite Pierce Brosnan, Salma Hayek and Jessica Alba. Nice cast, but too bad the plot sounds awful: A womanizing professor (Brosnan) meets his match (Hayek) after knocking up her step-siter, who’s also his grad student (Alba). Pass. [Variety]

• Wartime drama The Devil’s Harvest has cast (and already begun filming with) Max Irons, Samantha Barks, Aneurin Barnard, Ben Kingsley and Terrence Stamp. Barnard plays a young man “growing up in rural Ukraine who finds his life changed forever by the invasion of the Red Army and the subsequent persecution of his family and fellow countrymen as Stalin’s regime extends into Eastern Europe.” [Deadline]

Blake Lively has returned to us after taking off for nearly two years to get married to Ryan Reynolds and starting a lifestyle company and whatnot. She has now committed to star in fantasy romantic drama The Age of Adaline, playing a young woman who stops aging after a near-fatal accident, leaving her able to travel the world but in a lonely state, until she meets a very interesting man. Ellen Burstyn will also star. [Deadline]
