On September 19th, a Fund Anything campaign is going to launch in support of a film called Director’s Cut. Penn Jillette, the closest thing to a Barnum and Bailey barker in the film and TV right now, is being busy out there on the web, drumming up interest via social media. So far, though, he’s given away very little of what the film will be about.
By putting my e-mail address on a mailing list that will, come September 19th, remind me that Jillette wants my money, I received a “prize” gif. This, Jillette says, is from the film’s trailer.
But I’m not going to put the gif here – that seems unfair when it’s the only real initiative Jillette has to offer people for their e-mail addresses right now, and you can decide for yourself if you want to make the trade – but here’s what the text of his mass reply e-mail contained.
Here’s the groovy GIF I promised you. I think you’ll be able to use it – we all want to be bad, and you’re helping me get that way. These are shots (and ideas) taken from the trailer of my next feature film, Director’s Cut.
This movie is from my heart. I love it as much as anything I’ve ever done. Director’s Cut is not formulaic, and I see that as a feature not a bug. That’s a good thing! What I want in a movie is wit and surprise, and a bit of sexy and scary. So I’ll be asking you to help finance “Director’s Cut,” a movie for people like us, at FundAnything.com. The campaign launches September 19th and I’ve got tons of groovy rewards in return for your support. I do not want your money for nothing, (and I already have my chicks for free) — you’ll get great rewards for your contribution. We’re finishing up the rewards list now so make sure you’re the first to see it – this stuff will go fast.
So let’s make a movie together that we can all be proud of. I’ll keep you posted on the movie but in the meantime, have fun with this GIF. You know, I really am getting pretty sick of being nice. I hope you have fun watching the nice go away and the bad come in. Watch.
P.S. Adam Rifkin (from my favorite movie, Look – check it out now – we’re going to be a good team) has signed on as Director of this film. This is going to be so so boss! Thanks for joining me.
What makes this film “my film” for Jillette is that he’s written it. Incidentally, I do think it’s nice to see a director relegated to a PS and a writer take ownership for once – and while we’re talking about a film called Director’ Cut, no less.
The film also has a Facebook page, but there’s little info there just yet. There is a poster, mind you, and here it is.
Jillette co-wrote a script with Neil Gaiman a few years back, adapting The Road to En-Dor, but sadly, that never went before cameras. More recently, he’s produced Teller’s extremely well received new documentary, Tim’s Vermeer, and way back, in the 80s, he co-wrote and co-starred in Penn and Teller Get Killed, of which I am deeply fond. A good second career in the movies, I’d say.
I’m rooting for Director’s Cut. Jillette and Adam Rifkin seem to be a pretty good match, not to mention just the types who really could use a bit of off-studio support for their movie projects.
More on the 19th, I’m sure.
