Thirteen Thoughts About Thirteen Comics – Buffy, East Of West, Killjoys, Peter Panzerfaust, Spawn, Demon Knights, Superior Spider-Man Team Up, Batgirl, Wolverine & The X-Men, World’s Finest, Constantine, Fantastic Four And Justice League Of America

Another week, another lot of lovely comics to look through. So what’s been taking my eye?

In Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season Nine today, Willow gets a mystical lesson in the facts of life. I’m not sure exactly what the expression is though. Happiness? Confusion? Or, jusdging from the wisps of smoke, baked off her face?

Talking of expressions, East Of West has, by its very nature, combined aspects of Eastern and Western culture and influence in its Pot Noodle Western. But in this scene, it becomes readily apparent, extreme emotional scene bringing forth “manga eyes”, the kind of representation of emotion in physical characteristics more readily uses in East Asian comic book storytelling. It fits the moment…

killjoys Moving slightly down the face, True Live Of The Fabulous Killjoys gives us that most horrific future for some. A world without makeup. And then, within the despair, a dayglo glimmer of hope.

Peter Panzerfaust gets to the heart of the concept behind the book in this exchange. A man cursed to survive through the worst of wars, and carrying what he seen with him…

This scene of Spawn is from a comic that ties in with Robert Kirkman’s co-creation, Haunt. But wouldn’t it have been better if it had tied in with Kirkman’s Battle Pope?

The final issue of Demon Knights shows us that, unlike Spider-Man, you don’t always have to have witty reparte during fight scenes.

Spider-Man throws Scarlet Spider through a window in Superior Spider-Man Team Up, proving what a villain he is. Seriously the cost of glass repairs in New York must be going through the roof. If that roof had a skylight.

Which it does in Batgirl. Where great power comes without great responsibility, if if one superhero identity is wanted for murder, simply dress in different clothes. What, they can arrest you for red hair. Stop and frisk you, maybe…

Wolverine & The X-Men runs a reprise of Pacific Rim… and a not-quote-sure extension of Iceman’s powers to he can create a walking, talking, fighting giant robot with a sword to cut down an army of Krakoa living islands. It’s a great book, as every Hellfire Club meets their match from the X-Men, who put them down with words as much as fists.

Or do they? Either way, this suggestion from Kitty Pryde should be enough to motivate Bobby.

What is it comics has got today about kicking people, well, there… thank you World’s Finest.IMG_0016

Constantine blows a whole in swathes of Green Lantern continuity by having the least express the opinion that will is not an emotion. I bet current-Lantern writer Robert Vendetti wouldn’t have written that scene if he’s still been writing Constantine. Say, it couldn’t have been a dig, could it?

IMG_0012 It is not the worst. Other comic books than Fantastic Four have had far worse fake British accent in them. I mean, Phenom didn’t say “pip pip”. “I say” or end the sentence in “wot?” at all.

And now Catwoman flirts with a house in Justice League Of America. And it works. She must have stroked it’s doorknob.

Am I really going to leave it this week hanging with a little cheap innuendo? You bet I am.
