Whit Stillman Is Casting His Next Movie, Which He May Shoot In Britain


Back in May the news came in, via The Hollywood Reporter, that Whit Stillman was heading to Cannes to hold meetings for his next film, a period comedy set in Britain.

Presumably those meetings were successful as The New York Post are reporting that he’s now casting for the film.

Back in May, Stillman said the following about the lead role,

I believe this new story has the best female part of all the films I’ve made

And he’s now added that he’s met with a British actress.

Stillman is intending to shoot in Britain or “perhaps at the Anglo-Irish great houses near Dublin”. He’s previously mentioned projects that never came to fruition which were based in the British Isles so perhaps this new film is actually something that Stillman has been keen on making for some time.

He also told the New York Post that the film is an adaptation,

It’s based on a funny but obscure late 18th-century work that reads a bit like an Oscar Wilde play.

So, now we just need to figure out what that obscure work is and who could be the perfect actress for the female lead. That’s the game, right?

I’m very fond of all four of Stillman’s films to date so am very happy to hear that he’s moving forward with a new film. Especially in light of the long gap between The Last Days of Disco in 1998 and his last film, Damsels in Distress in 2011.
