Booze Geek: Pizza Beer

Dylan Gonzalez writes;

Beer: Pizza Beer

Brewery: Pizza Beer Company

Well, this is certainly a bizarre one. I would like to think I have tried my fair share of creative and strange beers, but this might be the first truly out there beer I have tried.

To be perfectly honest, I have had this beer for well over six months now. I originally purchase it to do a video review with some friends, but that never came to fruition so it has just been sitting in my fridge, waiting to be consumed.

Then I landed this gig and during my research for geeky beers, this one came up and I happened to have a bottle of it. And here we are.

Pizza Beer is an ale brewed with oregano, basil, garlic and tomato. Upon pouring it into my pint glass, I actually found that not all the beer would fit in it without risk of overflowing. More for me later, I guess. The beer produced little to no head and looked to be heavily carbonated. It was the standard amber/light brown color of beer.

When smelling the beer, I detected strong scents of oregano, basil and garlic. Combined with the smell of the beer itself, it was not horrible. More strange than anything. As I took my first sip, I immediately was hit with the taste of oregano and garlic. The basil was there as well, but was more prominent in the scent. I had a difficult time finding the tomato in the taste. The beer itself taste similar to Bud Light or any other standard, American beers.

It does not feel unpleasant on the palate. The carbonation is present, but it is the tastes that have the most effect. Pizza Beer leaves a strong, linger aftertaste of garlic on the tongue. Overall, the best way I can describe drinking Pizza Beer is this: it is like taking a bite of pizza after you have taken the cheesy top off and then taking a gulp of beer and chewing it all together so it turns into one, gooey amalgamation. I am not sure if I would recommend it other than for novelty reasons.

What To Drink This To:

If you absolutely have to drink this, thrown on one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons or movies. Better yet, if you have the money, grab one of those new omnibuses that are coming out collecting the old comic book series. Hell, I imagine if one of the Turtles ever became an alcoholic, this would probably be his go-to beer.

Dylan Gonzalez happens to love beer and comic books and luckily found a place to write about the former because he has no idea how to actually make money in the  real world.  He lives in a cave in New Jersey.
