Why We Don’t Believe The Latest Star Wars Plot And Character Rumours – UPDATED

The time will come on most movie projects, however big and secretive, that casting agencies will get their hands on plot and character details that studios and producers would rather keep under wraps. Sometimes, somebody at those agencies will decide to share.

I expect that, sooner or later, something like this will befall Star Wars Episode VII. Actually, maybe it already did, back in May. I certainly won’t be surprised if it happens again.

But I don’t believe it happened today.

I woke up this morning to read a story on Ain’t It Cool, highlighting a bit of business at Schmoes Know. The story was being well-read enough that it had crashed the Schmoes’ servers.

What they were reporting, with just a tiny quaver of doubt in their virtual voice, was a purported casting breakdown for Star Wars Episode VII.

And here it is.

Storyline: Two 17 year old twins, a girl and a boy, are trained by their uncle Luke to be the greatest Jedi’s in the galaxy. Problems arise when the male twin turns to the dark side.

Jaina Solo – Female, 17 years old, lead. – Jacen’s twin sister, one of the greatest Jedi’s in the galaxy, trained by her uncle Luke Skywalker

Jacen Solo – Male, 17 years old, lead – Jaina’s twin brother, one of the greatest Jedi’s in the world. A loner who is constantly struggling with the idea of what’s right and what’s wrong. Starts to turn to the dark side. Full of conviction that what he is doing is the “right thing”. Will eventually become Darth Caedus.

Many will recognise this as having elements from the Extended Universe novels, where Jaina and Jacen are well-known, well-loved characters. They’re the twin children of Han Solo and Leia Organa Solo.

I’d query a few dodgy things about the copy right away. For example, starting with:

Storyline:

isn’t “done.” Neither is ending with:

Will eventually become Darth Caedus.

And there’s a grocer’s apostrophe in:

Jedi’s

…though, to be honest, I’ve seen the mistake in plenty of real casting notices.

I wondered if, maybe, the copy had been edited for some reason. Maybe there was a real casting notice and it had been tweaked before posting. I was feeling sceptical but wanted to give The Schmoes the benefit of the doubt.

I did think I’d need to dig a little deeper, though.

When casting on the film begins in earnest and notices like these go out, there’s some chance I’ll know about it. The film is set to shoot in the UK and I’ve got a handful of friends in positions where they’d hear about such casting notices, or even receive them themselves. Sometimes they go on to share with me.

Very often, these friends have passed on info to me that I can’t pass on to you because, sadly, it really could kill off careers. It’s all been useful for deep research, though. And this info has often helped me sniff out “bad rumours.”

So, today, I asked amongst these friends if they had seen anything like the above notice. Nobody had. And nobody believed it was authentic.

If I had to guess, I’d say that somebody has pulled a fast one on the Schmoes. Unfortunate.

We’ll be waiting a while yet for Episode VII plot details, I think.

Production on the film starts in the UK early next year ahead of a release in 2015. Patience is a virtue.

UPDATE: HitFix have come out and slammed the rumours fully and totally. They’re telling us that they’ve got inside info on the next Star Wars films and without sharing any of it – well, except that ILM are already at work on set-pieces, as you might expect – they do make it clear that Lucasfilm’s plans have nothing at all to do with the Extended Universe.
