Who Do The Bookmakers Tip As The Next Star Of Doctor Who?

doctor who logo blackIf you fancy putting a punt on the casting of the next Doctor, both Ladbrokes and William Hill have published their odds.

Is there inside information in play? Almost certainly not, but these are odds cooked up by professionals at running the numbers. They might just be throwing darts, but they should – in theory – have slightly better aim than most folk.

Ladbrokes’ favourite, at 3/1, is Rory Kinnear, son of Roy Kinnear, recurring player in the Bond series and Black Mirror‘s pig-banging PM. I’d certainly be happy with that pick.

William Hill’s best odds are a pair of 10/1 offers on Russell Tovey and Rupert Grint. I’ve thought Tovey to be on the inside track for some time now, but we’ll see. Perhaps his previous, well-remembered guest role in the show will work against him.

Grint would finally give us a ginger Doctor, and it does feel like they’ve been setting that one up for some time.

Some of the nice long shots include Ladbrokes offering Miranda Hart (cough) or Hugh Laurie at 33/1, or Bill Bailey and James Corden at 50/1 each. William Hill have David Walliams and Stephen Fry at 66/1 a piece.

If you fancy a female Doctor, your best odds are Billie Piper at 16/1 with William Hill or Helen Mirren at 20/1 with Ladbrokes. Mirren has at least said that she’d take the role up for a year and, frankly, I’d find that quite the exciting pick.

William Hill’s best odds for a non-white candidate go to…. Paterson Joseph. Yep. 20/1. Meanwhile, Ladbrokes are offering 4/1 on David Harewood. Incidentally, both have played the somewhat Doctor-ish Marquis de Carabas. Joseph played him in the original TV version of Neverwhere, Harewood took up the role for the recent radio version.

It’s interesting that nobody is offering odds on the two names I fancy the most. Not yet, anyhow, but I do guess that these two – one fella, one lady, both of which we’ll be discussing with you later – will soon end up on the form.

I think I might go down to the bookmakers and put a fiver on each of them, just for fun. I’ll let you know…
