Though specifics are rather scarce, the Brazillian website Judao at least managed to squeeze Salma Hayek for a couple of leads during their recent interview.
In the first instance, Hayek teased that she is planning a new project with Penelope Cruz. The duo previously appeared on screen together in Bandidas, a Europacorp action-Western co-written and produced by Luc Besson. It’s not the best of the Besson-produced quick-n-dirty action capers, but it does have its fans – thanks in no small part to the casting.
Hayek said, of the new film with Cruz:
I still can’t tell much, you know, but we’re working together in a new idea. There’s nothing to do with Bandidas, but it’s going to be cool.
Also, Hayek told the site that she has an adaptation of a Belgian comic book lined up… but did not name the comic.
My best guess is that this film will be based on The Insiders. That book was optioned by Jessica Alba and Robert Rodriguez a few years back now, and intended to be a vehicle for Alba, starring as the Colombian secret agent Naja Cruz. JCVD‘s Mabrouk El Mechri was attached as a director. Nothing came of those plans yet, however, but I can easily imagine it being reborn with Hayek involved, in some way or another.
Or maybe not. I love Belgium, but I’m no expert on their comics. There might be a hundred other possibilities.
