BC Mag #3: Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes Comics

When the Planet of the Apes movie debuted in 1968, it defined both the era and a new high point for science fiction. With groundbreaking special effects and an avant-garde score that truly brought the future world of the apes to life, the movie would go on to spawn four sequels up to 1973, a short lived television series, a 2001 remake, and a 2011 reboot with a sequel in the works. The social commentary of the films would make a lasting impression on moviegoers, critics, and our general consciousness for years to come.

Like the longevity of the movie from whence it came, POTA would enjoy a long and colorful expansion of the universe through comic books; beginning with adaptations and extending into series which developed the characters and concepts beyond the scope of their film inspiration. While there were movie adaptations from Gold Key and some obscure Japanese manga, it was Marvel Comics that mastered the translation to comics with their Planet of the Apes Magazine and Adventures on the Planet of the Apes comic series.
