Rumour: Marvel’s Got Movie Plans For The Hulk, But Not A Trip To Planet Hulk

Having heard the high-profile rumours of a supposed Planet Hulk movie, Aint It Cool‘s Mr. Beaks did some digging of his own and has come back with a rebuttal.

This just isn’t happening – not as long as Marvel’s got Mark Ruffalo committed to a six-picture deal as Bruce Banner. And that’s the primary issue with Planet Hulk: Banner isn’t in it at all… To make sure, I went to a another source for confirmation, and they backed up every detail. Planet Hulk isn’t happening.

But something is, he suggests, reiterating that there are some plans, however tentative, to give The Hulk his own film.

I’m told that Ruffalo-as-Banner will be an integral part of [any Hulk] film. After two false starts with Banner, Marvel is thrilled with Ruffalo. The last thing they want to do is reduce his role. Sure, they could have Ruffalo play Hulk in mocap, but the Banner element would be gone – and this evidently is important to Marvel.

And me, I think. I reckon that Ruffalo absolutely aced it, and I’m very keen to see more of what he can do. It’s probably the single most enticing thing about Avengers 2 for me, in fact.

Joss Whedon commented just this week that he thinks a standalone Hulk movie is a tough trick to pull off:

It would be extremely difficult. The one thing you would have in your favour would be Mark Ruffalo. But right now I don’t know if they have plans to do that or not, because he works so well as part of a greater whole, but by himself, it’s tough.

And obviously it is. We had two rather unsatisfying passes at the character in just the ten years running up to The Avengers.

Now, I can see a way to take parts of the Planet Hulk story line and make it part of something bigger, or at least different, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Marvel try that instead – they certainly seem pretty keen to get a lot of their characters into space right now.

Considering how mysterious some elements of Iron Man 3 are even at this stage I don’t see much use in sitting around waiting for Marvel’s Hulk plans to come to light. Perhaps we’ll get an announcement of a Hulk-only film in the next year or three, perhaps it will take longer than that. In any case, I think Whedon’s right and I’ll probably not be able to avoid approaching the film with just a touch of weary scepticism.
