More Iron Man 3 Images, Downey Jr. Teases His Departure From The Role

A new set of Iron man 3 images, apparently scanned from the new issue of Empire magazine, reveal… well, not a fat lot. That not only do Advanced Idea Mechanics appear in the film, as set pictures from last Summer teased, they at the very least give Tony Stark a T-shirt.

And then there’s this pretty clear indication of an Iron Man power suit functioning with nobody inside. Or at least lighting up its doobrie without Tony Stark inside.

While, finally, this image of Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian show off… er… well, there are Stark decals in the window.

I’m expecting a strategic partnership between Stark and AIM. I’m also expecting it to go tits up once he finds out that they’re a power crazed offshoot of Hydra. If they are. Maybe they’re Ten Rings affiliated in the Movieverse. We’ll see.

Now, as well as these pictures, also in Empire are a few quotes from Robert Downey Jr. about his inevitable departure from the role of Tony Stark. He’s playing it pretty delicately, I think – likely because contracts have yet to be signed for him to come back. If he is going to come back.

Here’s what he said:

I feel that the first time I played Tony, I did it best… how do you sustain something? I’m not stupid, I like to play ball, I love the company, I love the character, and the business side of things, I’m not too picky about that either… Tony’s going to carry on. Avengers 2 already has a release date… It would probably be the best thing in the world for me [to stop]… I don’t have to overstay my welcome…

This is not the first time Downey, or indeed Kevin Feige, has tired to prepare us for a replacement Stark.

Who on Earth, though? Who could it possibly be?

Iron Man 3 is released in the UK this April 26th, then a week later in the US. Rule Britannia.
