The Onion Headed To Amazon Streaming In Sitcom Form, Jeffrey Tambor Hired To Star

Amazon are stepping up their rivalry with Netflix and amongst the most interesting of their new commissions is a sitcom set behind the scenes of The Onion News Network.

I’ve seen a lot of casting calls for the show in recent days – fishermen, asian businessmen, background journalists, PAs and interns – and Deadline are reporting that the lead role in the show has gone to Jeffrey Tambor.

Tambor is an alum of Arrested Development, the prime comedy over at Netflix, which perhaps makes this look more like a direct rebuttal than it really was.

The Onion‘s a well-loved brand and I think it might do Amazon’s streaming service some good if they can make it clear that what they’re offering isn’t just more of what the YouTube channel full of Onion newslets already provides. For free.
