Sean Penn Making An Action Movie With The Director Of Taken

Liam Neeson became an action movie star pretty much overnight when Taken became an unexpectedly strong hit. We might be about to see the same thing happen to Sean Penn.

The Hollywood Reporter have learned that Taken‘s director Pierre Morel is negotiating to direct the dreadfully-titled Prone Gunman. It’s based on the novel by Jean-Patrick Manchette, as adapted by Dredd director Peter Travis. I’ve seen the novel compared to Bourne movies – as opposed to books – and also to the films of Jean-Pierre Melville.

Man, I’d have loved to see Melville make a Bourne movie. That would have been something.

Gunman will be a Transeuropean chase movie and shooting is expected to take place in several countries. Studio Canal are financing the whole thing themselves, keeping out of Hollywood and production is expected to start this Spring.

Penn was recently seen in Gangster Squad, though more intentionally humour results are the goal of his next picture: Ben Stiller’s new telling of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. That should be along at the end of the year.
