Speaking at the TCA Press Tour, writer Jenny Bick talked just a little about her in-development TV series sequel to Heathers. She’s got her work cut out for here, I think – Heathers has the greatest screenplay of any feature film ever… doesn’t it?
There’s a meeting with the brass coming this week, Bick says, and Bravo may then commission a pilot.
A ways to go, then, but she’s certainly “hopeful.” And also pragmatic – speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Bick says:
If Winona Ryder wanted to come in and play something, we’d love to have her.
Veronica Sawyer, Ryder’s role in the original movie, is a key character in the show and Bick is obviously expecting it to be recast. Makes sense – I can’t see Ryder committing to a full series on Bravo, no matter how much she loves the original film. And she does love the original film. A lot. Almost as much as me, it would seem.
And, unsurprisingly, Bick would be okay with any of the original cast cropping up in the show:
Bring them all back! I think there’s that sense of the people who know the original would love to see that but then there’s also this opportunity for this whole new generation who doesn’t know Heathers the way we do to be introduced to it in a new way… It would be fun, why not!
Here’s why not – it would be disruptive. I’m sat there watching the continued misadventures of Veronica Sawyer and Veronica Sawyer shows up? Not a good move.
Ideally, I’d have loved Daniel Waters to be writing this and for all of the original cast to return in their original roles. Ideally. But that would be expensive.
Ah, what the heck. I’m off to buy a lottery ticket..
