UPDATE: Guillermo Del Toro has been in touch to tell us that, actually, this footage has nothing to do with Pacific Rim. These clips are much older than Pacific Rim, he says, and the two projects are not in any way associated. Case closed. Original story follows.
Those of us lucky enough to be in Hall H throughout Comic-Con this summer saw the first publicly released footage from Pacific Rim, Guillermo Del Toro‘s upcoming Kaiju smackdown picture. Once the clips were done, Del Toro said that we probably wouldn’t see anything else from the film until Christmastime.
How about Thanksgiving? That close enough?
Well, the following video features some footage of a giant robot with some giant missiles stepping out from behind a giant building, ready to make a giant mess. It doesn’t actually look like completely finished Pacific Rim footage at all, but is it some kind of work in progress or pre-viz work?
The clip in question is around 1 minute and 15 seconds into this video.
Was that one of Del Toro’s giant Jaeger robots? Or do big, brawlin’ bots follow Del Toro everywhere he goes? Well… actually, what I saw at Comic-Con meshes pretty well with the design there, if not the ‘texture’ and look of the image.
The whole video is worth a watch. It’s a promo for Mirada, the FX company and production facility that Del Toro set up with Guillermo Navarro and a couple of Motion Theory vets.
I think we’ll get our first Pacific Rim online trailer around December 10th or so. Don’t expect it to look like the above footage too much, even if the robot design crosses over or even matches.
