Has The Surprise Cameo In Andrew Niccol’s The Host Been Spoiled?

In the novel, The Host, there’s a small but key role for a character called Pet. The filmmakers have not revealed who will be playing this character in the movie adaptation, but there has been a lot of guesswork and speculation amongst the original book’s fans.

Bleeding Cool’s friend Linda Ge got in touch last night to tell me that she’d found out who was playing the part, and just how she found out. There is a tiny bit of room for human error in the chain, but having talked it over with Linda, I think we should trust her source.

And… should you not want to spoil the surprise, look away now.

So, here’s how Linda reported it at Up and Comers:

Though this hasn’t been officially confirmed and should be considered a rumor for all intents and purposes, a reliable source tells us that Australian actress Emily Browning plays the pivotal role of Pet…

…Browning is a pretty logical choice for the role which has been kept tightly under wraps until now, considering the cameo-sized part would have taken no time at all to shoot and she was dating Irons in real life at the time of filming. If you haven’t read the book, we won’t spoil the details of her character, but suffice to say she shows up at towards the story’s conclusion.

It’s a neat bit of casting. The Tumblr-giddy audience of The Host will known Browning well and be excited to see her, and she’s certainly more than capable of playing the part.

Indeed – there are echoes of some of her previous roles in Pet. To say much more would be a spoiler, really.

Browning spent this summer filming God Help The Girl, the musical from Belle & Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch, and she has Magic Magic and Summer in February on the way too. The Host would be the highest profile of all of these, despite the rather small scale of the role.
