New Stephen Chow! First Teaser For His Take On Journey To The West

The next big-budget, Chinese-produced retelling of the Journey to the West story has been directed by Stephen Chow and Gallants’ Derek Kwok.

This brief teaser trailer was unveiled at a press conference in China today, along with the above poster. According to Mtime (via Twitch), Chow announced that he doesn’t have a major acting role in the film, contrary to earlier plans and, indeed, reports. That’s a shame, because he’s tremendous, but I’m still absolutely over the moon that we’re drawing in on a new film by him no matter what the circumstances.  His films have offered up a wonderful blend of Tex Avery, Billy Wilder and 80s-era Jackie Chan, amongst many other, rich flavours, and they shouldn’t necessarily gel as well as they do. Kwok’s Gallants was similarly excellent.

Not the title card referring to this as a “chapter”? That’s because a sequel is already in the works. Not only in America, eh?
