Sean Howe, author of The Untold Story Of Marvel Comics, which I am currently poring through, is continuing to run bits and pieces, some that get picked up in the book, some not.
That includes Marvel sales notes for some of its titles in the mid seventies. Apparently “girls like Black Widow character” and both Gun Hawk and Luke Cage have “appeal” amongst black people. Who would have thought? Ghost Rider should be stacked with motorbike magazines, and Conan is popular amongst college kids.
It’s also made me google what the hell Beware and Chili were. Wow, that last one is one hell of a swipe, no wonder Marvel wanted to stack it with Archie Comics…
Flipped through that Marvel tell all book and honestly there is so, so much missing. Enjoy it for what it is, but just a sampling/portion

Bottom line, Jim and I were consulted on entire Marvel line during that 18 month period. We even picked the new EIC. Came down to 2 names.

We were unanimous in our selection. Both Bill Jemas, then later Dan Buckley boasted that they were HR’s undoing. I was long gone by then.
