Sinister's Director And Producer Reunite For Adaptation Of Stephen King's The Breathing Method

Scott's Derrickson's bumps-in-the-night tale Sinister has been out in cinemas for almost a fortnight now and has received a generally positive response from critics, as well as a reputation for being one of the scarier films out this year. Perhaps it's because of this success that producer Jason Blum has already decided to bring Derrickson back to direct his next film, an adaptation of one of Stephen King's novellas.

The Breathing Method will be the final story in Stephen King's four-part anthology Different Seasons to see a large screen adaptation. The three other 'seasons' in the book were Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, which of course became The Shawshack Redemption, The Body, which was brought to the screen under the title Stand By Me, and Apt Pupil, which was adapted in 1998 with Ian McKellen and Brad Renfro.

While the combination of Scott Derrickson and Stephen King might seen like an obvious choice, The Breathing Method only fits marginally within the horror genre; like the stories mentioned above, it is better described as a drama with a few gruesome elements. Said gruesome elements can't be revealed without spoiling the end, so for now let's just say that it's about a woman who is determined to give birth to the illegitimate child that she is carrying, even in the face of society's judgement and her own financial problems.

According to Deadline, Jason Blum's production company Blumhouse have secured the option from Stephen King, and chosen Scott Teems to write the screenplay. There's no information at the moment about where financing is coming from, but since Sinister made its $3 million budget back six times over just in the opening weekend, they've got a strong position to build from.
