Cartoonist Arrested For Sedition

Aseem Trivedi appeared in court in Mumbai today, on charges on sedition and is being held on remand until later this month. Such a crime is punishable by up to three years in jail. Aseem has refused to seek bail.

Cartoonist Arrested For SeditionHis charge related to accusations that cartoons he drew mocked the Indian constitution, and insulted the Indian flag. Trivedi was working with the current anti-corruption movement, creating Cartoons Against Corruption.

The Chairman of the Press Council of India told newspapers that even arresting Trivedi was illegal, and that those who arrested him should be arrested for doing so. And a former Supreme Court judge has spoken out that no cartoon should be a crime and that politicians must accept critcism.

Twitter is, naturally, ablaze.
