Here’s some more shading to the jaw-dropper of a deal between Joss Whedon and Marvel that will see him writing and directing The Avengers 2 and lending an eye to the rest of their cinematic, and now televisual, universe.
Joss Whedon spoke to Variety at a screening of Sleepwalk With Me,* and they’ve come away with scant quotes. On their site, they manage:
[Whedon] said the storyline for the proposed series will be largely “autonomous” from the Avengers sequel feature that is also in the works.
And writer Cynthia Littleton managed these tweets:
Joss whedon on Avengers ABC pilot– don’t call it a spinoff, its a SHIELD thing and meant to be “autonomous” to the film storylines.

altho joss reserves right to pepper in bits here and there. His bro Jed and Maurissa T. will be showrunners, he’ll just show up … — Cynthia Littleton (@Variety_Cynthia) August 29, 2012
Every now and then “and take credit for everything,” Joss assures. — Cynthia Littleton (@Variety_Cynthia) August 29, 2012
And, answering my question in respect of Whedon being able to keep working outside of the Marvel parameters while his deal is ongoing, Littleton also tweets:
Joss swears folo to Dr Horrible is still in cards, hopes to be in prod’n within the year. They’ll be “media agnostic” in how it’s distibbed

Having Whedon on hand is going to be good for Marvel. It’s also nice to see he won’t be spreading himself too thinly. He’s definitely got a good pair of showrunners there – he’ll always have their ear, they’ll always have his.
Now we just have to see if the series actually gets commissioned. Seems like a no-brainer, but we’ll see…
*Maybe he was just speaking on stage during a Q&A. They don’t make it entirely clear.
