Tony Scott: 1944 – 2012.When the news broke earlier today that British-born filmmaker Tony Scott had fallen to his death from the Vincent Thomas bridge in an apparent suicide the web was alive with speculation about his possible motive.

It's a shame that Scott might be remembered mainly for his biggest, silliest film – the quintessentially 1980s Top Gun – and for being the younger brother to Ridley Scott.

He deserved more than that.

Top Gun may be considered a kitsch classic, but it's still a classic. True Romance performed disappointingly at the box office but showed Scott making a Tarantino film as well, if not better, than the tyro himself. Enemy Of The State riffed on the idea of Coppola's quiet, thoughtful The Conversation and turned it into a state-of-the-art pumped-up chase thriller. Scott may have been playing to the cheap seats with his shameless audience pleasers, but audiences across the globe loved him for that.

Starting out in TV commercials he got something of a false start with lubricious vampire flick The Hunger before getting his 'real' break from Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer on Top Gun.

As well as directing a string of blockbusters, which included five films with Denzel Washington, he co-produced various properties with his elder brother including the 2010 A-team movie and the long-running TV legal drama The Good Wife.

At the time of his death Tony and his brother were working on a film adaptation of Bill O'Reilly's book Killing Lincoln, set for release in 2013.

The film world has been effusive in praise for the director.

Duncan Jones, the director of Moon and Source Code, said of Scott today that he "ignited my passion to make films.". Edgar Wright said "Tony Scott was a rambunctious cinematic spirit. As I hope was evident in my work, I was big fan of his."

Val Kilmer described Scott as "the kindest film director I ever worked for"

Anthony David Scott was 68. He leaves behind a wife, Donna (who appeared in several of her husband's films) and twin sons.

He can be Bleeding Cool's wingman any time.

UPDATE: ABC News, a reputable source, had initiated widespread reporting that Scott was suffering from inoperable brain cancer. This has since been refuted by Scott's family. The final determination of the autopsy is not yet known.
