Back in April I posited that a sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman might not feature Snow White herself. Seems like that prediction is coming to pass.
Last night, The Hollywood Reporter took the position that the character has been outright nixed from the follow up. They said:
The sequel… is being reconceived as a spinoff movie. It’s unclear whether director Rupert Sanders will return, though one source with ties to the production says he will.
And I guess the tabloids have made sure that it’s either Sanders or Kristen Stewart, not both.
A balancing act which becomes especially interesting in light of a follow up report in The LA Times:
Universal, insists that plans for a second movie centering on the Huntsman character played by Chris Hemsworth are proceeding and that Stewart’s Snow White could still be a character in that film, despite reports that suggested otherwise.
At least we’re all in agreement that the film would centre on The Huntsman even if S-White* is in it.
The Times go on to say:
Universal has yet to select a writer or a director for the Huntsman-centered project, though Sanders remains on the list of possible director candidates.
One might speculate that it really is a case of Sanders or Stewart, and that the studio will go with one or the other. Each has some market value, and I can understand why they’d be desirable to the studio – and if they don’t get one of them, there’d no longer be any reason to freeze the other out.
My suspicion is that they’re going for Sanders first, Stewart second.
Which would mean at least two variants on the script, if not two different scripts. If Snow White has as minor a role as I suspect, it could be designed that Sleeping Beauty or Little Red Riding Hood or Gretel or whoever could be a standby to slot into place.
David Koepp had been working on the film but with the change of plans, he’s now been paid off and will be free of the commitment.
Chris Hemsworth becomes available next Summer. If this film is going to happen, that seems like the window. Universal just have to work out what it is they actually want here in the meantime.
*Surely that’s what the kids call her?
