Bill And Ted 3 Sounds Rather Interesting

Now that a script has been completed, conversation on Bill and Ted 3 can turn from whether or not it’s going to happen – though, of course, it’s still not definite we can at least see wheels in motion – to what it will actually be about.

Alex Winter spoke to MTV, and the two themes he evoked were, I think, just the right ones.

The movies were always about rock & roll, that was a big part of the movies, so what’s happened to rock & roll in the last twenty years? The movie’s gonna get in and play with some of that stuff – where’s rock, where are we, what’s happened to the whole idea of saving the world, or what hasn’t happened?

Changes to rock music will give us a lot, but it’s those last comments that have me hooked. What has happened to the whole idea of saving the world? Or what hasn’t happened?

Here’s the full MTV clip.

I always liked the first two films. The original Excellent Adventure had a sly and witty script and did tap into some bigger ideas; then Bogus Journey perhaps played up character comedy and novel genre ideas more, but it was still an awful lot of fun and Peter Hewitt’s low-fi fantasy mise en scene was resourceful too.

I’m all up for more Bill and Ted in any case, particularly if Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon are writing again, which seems to be so. I’m very keen to see what they characters are like in their somewhat older years, and Winter’s suggestions here that there’s at least some real ambition behind the return of these Wild Stallyns is also very encouraging.

Now what they need next is a good director. The first name that comes to mind is James Bobin, actually…
