Another One Makes It Four Versions On The Go At Once – Dracula Is The New Snow White

We thought we were getting our fill of Dracula with two new movies in the works, but we were wrong. Because actually, there are four potential movies trying to make their way to the big screen that are based on Bram Stoker's legendary vampire.

Just to recap: Warner Bros is talking to Russell Crowe about doing Harker for director Jaume Collet-Serra, while Universal resurrected once-dead Alex Proyas-Sam Worthington origin tale Dracula: Year Zero for new director Gary Shore. Now Deadline is reporting that the two will have even more stiff competition, one from horror master Guillermo del Toro and another from two parties already well versed in same-subject battles.

Deadline says Del Toro is readying an adaptation of his own contemporary novel trilogy, which began with The Strain and concluded in last October's The Night Eternal. Del Toro will jump on the trilogy after completing big budget alien action flick Pacific Rim.

Meanwhile, the writer of Snow White tale Mirror Mirror and the producers behind Snow White and the Huntsman have apparently put aside their differences, and will team up on another period origin tale of Dracula for Sony Pictures.

Perhaps producers Joe Roth and Palak Patel took a liking to their new Dracula writer Jason Keller after he put his foot in his mouth and insinuated Mirror Mirror was only being made in order to beat its competition, prompting a swift statement of denial from the studio. Ouch. Note to Sony: don't let this guy show up on Dracula Junket Day.

So why the sudden and all-encompassing obsession with bringing Dracula back to the big screen? Sounds to me like this all comes out of a need to reform the idea of vampires in popular culture, reinstating them as the horrific murderous badasses they once were. Thanks a lot, Twilight.

*Brendon's footnote: Perhaps it's five, in fact. Hammer are also looking to take another crack at Dracula, but that might a couple of years away yet…
