Sullivan Stapleton To Play Xerxes In The 300 Sequel
For some reason or another, it seems that Rodrigo Santoro won’t be reprising his role of Xerxes for the 300 sequel, and Sullivan Stapleton has been roped in to play the part.
Stapleton made an impact with his turn in David Michôd’s Australian crime drama Animal Kingdom – indeed, everybody in that one left some sort of mark, with Joel Edgerton pretty much blasting a crater.
Is Sullivan going to go for the same approach as Santoro? I wouldn’t even be sure that the role has been written with the same demeanour – despite some of the events of this film happening in parallel to those in the first, screenwriters Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad have some latitude to change things up as, amongst their themes – as Snyder told me at the Sucker Punch junket last spring – will be propaganda and representation. When it comes to telling a propaganda story, a new point of view brings a new version of reality.
This is our second piece of casting for the 300 sequel, which may or may not still be subtitled Battle of Artemisia, with Eva Green already on board to play the titular goddess. She’s apparently both ruthless and gold covered, and she convinces Xerxes to go to war. Didn’t need to be ruthless to do that – the gold covered but alone would probably have worked.
