VIDEO: Bleeding Cool Meets Robin Williams, George Miller And More At The Happy Feet 2 Premiere

At the weekend, I went to the UK premiere of Happy Feet 2, which I’m delighted to say is as idiosyncratic and ambitious as its predecessor. It’s out here on December 2nd, so while we don’t have any Muppets on the horizon, I’m tipping the penguins as the Christmas family film of choice for the UK.

While I don’t think George Miller will ever make another film as eccentric as Babe 2: Pig in the City (I’m not sure anybody will), the philosophising Krill in Happy Feet 2 do strike a familiarly goofy-smart note.

I was lucky enough to speak to the film’s stars and director Miller at the premiere and, had all gone to plan, I would have had an assistant with me to take charge of the camera or the mic. But I didn’t. My assistant was busy lazying my plans away.

So, I had to try and talk to everybody and film them at the same time, and in a rather ad hoc fashion too. Not ideal. The footage was… patchy, so I’ve salvaged the best looking and best sounding pieces. Because my voice was lost entirely from the recording, I’ve used title cards to put the comments into context.

What follows is three or four minutes of me chatting with Miller, Robin Williams, Elijah Wood and Sofia Vergara. I spoke with them all about the same themes, all related to the film: the power of pop music, the continued destruction being caused by climate change, the strengths CG movies and how they are made. Miller also explained why he is returning to live action for his new Mad Max movies.

It was a shame that I only got to speak to each for a few minutes when Miller and Williams in particular seemed to be only scratching the surface of what they were talking about. Maybe I’ll do better at the premiere of Happy Feet 3.
