"The delicious irony is of course that in the 1950s and 1960s, as the government used the comic book form to educate audiences and push messages, it also was trying to ban the American comic book. The moral crusade against comics held them accountable for everything from poor grades to crime rates. Some cities and schools banned and burned them. Fredric Wertham's 1954 book, "Seduction of the Innocent," claimed comic books were a dangerous form of popular culture promoting violence and homosexuality. A Senate subcommittee on juvenile delinquency took interest.

"And yet all the while, government agencies couldn't deny the usefulness of this bright and easily digestible format.

He says "it easily started in the 1990s but it has gained ground over the years and really got big in 2005 onwards. It's really gained a good following all over the globe." The emergence and expansion of Steampunk shows the scope of the SF and Fantasy genres, even the new 'Three Musketeers' film has a Steampunk feel to it.

I looked back at some of it but I didn't go through it obsessively. I wanted to see some of what had been done before but with the mandate of this [company initiative] and its need to feel new, it was less of a priority. We knew we were going in a different direction with things.
