More from the Skyfall press conference.
The film is to shoot in Whitehall, Scotland, Turkey and, of course, Pinewood Studios. They start filming today. The Scottish scenes are being shrouded in secrecy.
Skyfall is not based upon any prior Bond book or property of any kind.
The plot of Skyfall is not connected to the last two films and Quantum are not involved. So we can forget all that jibber jabber about a trilogy we were slathered with on the way into Solace.
You can seen a title treatment type logo thing at the head of the post. Don’t expect it to stick, it was likely just knocked up for the press conference.
The budget is in a similar range to Quantum of Solace and nothing in the script was changed for budgetary reasons.
They’re keeping the same production crew, effects and stunt teams as the last film.
Asked if there will be gadgets, Mendes said there will be some “surprises.” I’m not sure if the absence or the inclusion of gadgets would be more surprising at this stage.
There has been discussion about several possible musicians to record the theme tune but nothing has been settled on yet.
Mendes says that Bond films are “for the audience,” and that he’s excited to work with second unit on action. He said some as-you’d-expect piffle about action and drama having to co-exist.
Lots of “special things” are planned to mark the 50th anniversary of Bond, but they won’t be more specific, save announcing the production of a new Bond documentary. I’m telling you now: one of the other, secret things will be that massive Blu-ray set that I was talking about a week or two ago.
Mendes says he’d like to direct a second Bond if he enjoys making this film as much as he’s enjoying himself right now. Or, to put it another way, “If I want to direct a second Bond film once I’ve done one, then, once I’ve done one, I’ll want to do a second one.”
Both Berenice Marlohe and Naomie Harris, who are playing the “enigmatic” Severin and “field agent” Eve, have had weapon training, and Harris talked about jumping out of cars (moving cars?) and running up and down stairs. Running up and down stairs? I hope that’s just for general fitness and not an indication of the kind of action scenes they have in mind.
Daniel Craig said he’d like to do Bond for a few years yet. I’d like him to do it forever, frankly, but I’m not so sure about his friend Mendes…
Mr. Mendes was asked if audiences would recognise the names of the characters that he won’t be revealing today. He said “They might do… then again, they might not.” He’s practically playing the role of a hairdryer at the moment…
Incidentally, that last question was asked by Ben Mortimer, a sometime Bleeding Cool contributor. It amuses me to publish the answer here before he’s been able to sell it elsewhere. I even beat his “live blog”, which was nice.
