“Ominous” New Coen Bros. Film Gets John Goodman And Invites Justin Timberlake Too

The next film from the Coen Bros. is to be Inside Llewyn Davies, a story set amidst the 1960s folk scene of Greenwich village. I was expecting a comedy, maybe a drama with moments of comedy,* but apparently, the film will be packing some “ominous twists”.

This is according to Showbiz 411, in their story on the casting of John Goodman in the film.

I’m told Goodman will join Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, and Justin Timberlake in “Inside Llewyn Davis,” the story loosely based on Dave van Ronk and the Greenwich Village folk music scene circa 1960. This will be like “The Mighty Wind” with ominous twists.

I hope that this comment on the film’s twists roots back to the same source as Goodman’s casting and isn’t just a supposition because the Coens are in charge.

You’ll have seen young Mr. Timberlake mentioned there. According to Variety, he’s been offered a role in the film as Jim, a folk musician and the husband of Jean, who will be played by Carey Mulligan. Oscar Isaac has the title role, folk hero Llewyn Davis, who is reportedly based upon Dave van Ronk, lynchpin of the folk movement.

In the Variety piece it says that Llewyn Davis is:

a struggling folk musician born and bred in Queens. Despite being a talented singer and guitarist, he just can’t seem to make ends meet playing music.

Enter the ominous twists?

Inside Llewyn Davis starts shooting in the new year.

*Have Joel and Ethan Coen ever made a single film devoid of humour? I certainly can’t think of one…
