Mark Millar’s War Heroes Headed To Universal – UPDATED

Since 2008, the rights to adapt Mark Millar and Tony Harris‘ War Heroes comics were sitting with Columbia. Three years later, they’ve failed to find a way to bring the superpowered soldiers project to the screen and have put it into turnaround, meaning other folks could sweep in and grab it for themselves.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s Universal pushing out the crash mats. Apparently, exec Jeff Kirschenbaum is a big Millar fan.
UPDATE: We’ve learned that the project was not in turnaround from Sony at all and that THR have slightly misreported there. The Universal deal is still being negotiated, but is expected to come through just fine.
The studio’s plan is to put Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer to work on the script. These guys have recently been writing Doctor Strange for Marvel, a new draft of the Uncharted movie, a big screen Voltron and, previously, wrought some damage on the Conan the Barbarian screenplay. Something tells me they’re “like us” – ie. total bloody nerds.
Next question: who’s going to direct this thing. Let’s start a process of elimination by putting a big red line through The Losers‘ Sylvain White, shall we? Anybody else we should nix?
