Details Of The Muppet Soundtrack Revealed – Feist, Joanna Newsom, Covers Of Nirvana And Cee Lo Green

The second big Muppets album to be released this year, after The Green Album and its hip array of covered Muppet classics, will be the soundtrack to the movie. The track listing has been released, and there’s a bunch of nice surprises. Here it is, with my notes on each song.

The Muppet Show Theme – The Muppets

Which is just how it should begin, do we agree? Oddly, Joanna Newsom is providing guest vocals for this version of the theme. Have you heard her voice? It’s very distinctive.

Life’s a Happy Song – Jason Segel, Amy Adams and Walter

You can see some shots from this song and dance number in the trailer. It’s the one in the small town, with the dancing milkman.

It’s during this version of the song, I believe, that Mickey Rooney provides guest vocals – and on either this version or the reprieve near the finale, Feist turns up.

It’s the first of four songs in the film written by Bret McKenzie of The Flight of the Conchords.

Pictures in My Head – Kermit and The Muppets

I wrote about this song at length before, including a run down on its lyrics. I’ve seen the scene and loved it.

This song was written by Jeannie Lurie, Aris Archontis and Chen Neeman.

Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard – Paul Simon

The first needle-drop on the soundtrack.

Rainbow Connection – The Moopets

The Moopets are a not-quite-right Muppets tribute act. Fozzie has been performing with them in recent years, until Kermit and co. arrive to reunite with him.

We Built This City – Starship

The Muppets get knee deep in the hoopla. Maybe they’ll use this for the “cleaning up the theatre” scene, because there is one.

Me Party – Amy Adams and Miss Piggy

Another Bret McKenzie composition.

Let’s Talk About Me – Chris Cooper

And another. This makes two “me” songs in a row – I wouldn’t be surprised if they feed into each other some how. Nathan Pacheco guests on this one.

Man or Muppet – Jason Segel and Walter

More McKenzie.

Smells Like Teen Spirit – The Muppets Barbershop Quartet

The only barbershop quartet I remember from the shows were cacti, from the Muppets Tonight series. This can’t be them… can it? I doubt it.

I expect this, and the next, are songs from the big show from near the end of the movie.

Forget You – Camilla and The Chickens

Camilla is, like The Chickens, a Chicken. A “Cluck You” joke seems to be in order.

Rainbow Connection – The Muppets

And here, everybody bursts into tears, on cue.

The Whistling Caruso – Andrew Bird

I know Andrew Bird, mainly, as a member of The Squirrel Nut Zippers. I’d guess this is another needle drop. At least seems to be a new song.

Life’s a Happy Song – Finale Entire Cast

A reprise of the earlier song. We’ve previously run an on-set video from the filming of this sequence in which you could hear some of the song and see the big cast of characters, both human and Muppet, on Hollywood Boulevard.

Mahna Mahna – Mahna Mahna and The Two Snowths

This appears over the end credits, or perhaps halts them. Some shots from the sequence appeared in the Pig With the Froggy Tattoo trailer – the brief clips of Neil Patrick Harris, and young Rico Rodriguez from Modern Family.

We also reported that Mila Kunis will be making her appearance during this number.

As well as all of these songs there will be 15 snippets of dialogue from the film.

I assume Christophe Beck’s underscore will be released separately?

Thanks to Billboard for the listing.
