Wanted 2 Brings Original Writers Back, And Mark Millar Hints At More Adaptations

The sequel to the 2008 adaptation of Mark Millar‘s graphic novel Wanted has been floating around in the aether for a long time. At one point it was supposedly canned after Angelina Jolie refused to return, mainly because [INSUFFICIENT SPOILER ALERT SPACE] her character died at the end of the first film. Jolie cited this as one of the main reasons that she didn’t feel up for a sequel.

Being dead makes it difficult. They were (trying to bring me back) but I kind of feel like if I die in a movie, I should die actually. I’m that way, and that character is not as complex as Salt. It would just be doing the exact same thing in another movie, so it’s not that interesting to me. [Coming Soon]

It’s pretty impressive that Jolie continues to pull the strings on the Wanted scripts even from beyond the grave. Ironically, it was her script change that killed the character off in the first place.

In the original, she doesn’t kill herself … I actually changed the ending. I said, ‘If she was to find out she had killed people unjustly and was a part of something that wasn’t fair, then she should take her own life.’ [MTV]

Believe it or not, Angelina Jolie isn’t actually going to be writing the script for Wanted 2. Derek Haas announced on Twitter yesterday that he and Michael Brandt, co-writers of the original Wanted, have been brought back to write the sequel. In conversation with The Wrap, Haas explained that the film doesn’t have a director attached yet, but that he and Brandt are planning to pick up the story where it left off with James McAvoy‘s character Wesley.

Wanted 2 [is] going to take off after the events of what just happened … Pick up Wesley a few years later and go back in for another round.

It’s a nice plan, but unless they do some clever recasting it relies entirely upon persuading James McAvoy to come back for another round. Since starring in X-Men: First Class McAvoy has become hot property and Universal may find themselves facing heavy competition when trying to bring him back for a sequel.

And finally, Mark Millar has been hinting that Wanted 2 is only one in a series of upcoming film adaptations of his work. Following the news about Wanted 2, he announced on his own site that:

“This is one of four or five big movie announcements from Millarworld in the next four weeks. Stay tuned.”
