Legendary Set Out Their Plans For The Mass Effect Movie

It was officially announced at Comic-Con this year (and unofficially before hand) that Legendary Pictures had appointed Mark Protosevich to write a screenplay based upon the Mass Effect videogames. Lots of questions were asked at the panel, and they were indeed answered, but there were plenty more in waiting that the panellists didn’t have time to address.

So afterwards, Legendary set up a webpage, quietly, offering plenty more information on the film. Kotaku found this page today, a month after publication – so, while this isn’t fresh-fresh news, it certainly didn’t go wide until this afternoon. Now I can only imagine everybody with an X-Box is chatting about it over those little headsets they’ve all had welded on. Ahem.

Here’s a quick digest of the info, in my own write:

The game isn’t going to be based upon any of the games’ stories, but Shepherd, the male version of Shepherd, is to be the protagonist. The film isn’t going to even attempt to embody the free-choice dynamic of the game. And Seth Green isn’t going to play Joker. But the games’ developer Bioware are working closely with the film’s producers.

I’m disappointed that they’ve elected to focus on the male Shepard, therefore negating the game’s unusual gender-equality tactic. I wish they’d instead created a different character entirely, and maybe factored in some kind of choose-the-sex-of-your-baby reference.

Daft footnote: Seeing as they’re the ones making the film, I suppose we can take all of Legendary’s answers to the bank… even if they tell a weird untruth on the very same page.

Underneath the Mass Effect q&a, there’s a bit about Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim. Nothing new there, really except for the final lie.

Q:  Will there be any Lovecraftian influence in PACIFIC RIM?

A:  No.

Hang on… they’re saying that Guillermo Del Toro is making a film with zero Lovecraftian influence. Really?

Crikey. Maybe that should have been the headline.
