Another Steven Moffat Idea Gets An American Echo – ABC Developing Modern Day Jekyll And Hyde

ABC currently have two modern-day retellings of Robert Louis Stevenson‘s Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde ready for development, but writer Steven Moffat can proudly lay claim to having got there first with Jekyll. It’s like the Sherlock story from Wednesday all over again.

Moffat’s series was shown on the BBC and featured James Nesbitt as the descendant of the original Henry Jekyll, a man who is afflicted with the same personality disorder but has arranged a timeshare on his body with his alter ego. If you know the show and it’s many twists, you’ll be able to compare the specifics to the two different directions that ABC could choose to go in.

First up is this proposal from Up in the Air‘s Sheldon Turner, which Deadline say will be about:

an ER doctor whose id manifests itself as a different person when he goes to sleep as a result of an experimental medical treatment.

But the latest announcement is about a new proposal from ABC studio-man Mark Gordon and feature film writer Matt Lopez. This one…

is described as a suspenseful, darkly romantic retelling of the classic tale with a unique sci-fi twist that I hear may be cloning-related. Set in modern San Francisco, it centers on a female criminal psychologist who is drawn into the mysterious world of a brilliant but inhibited scientist and his volatile alter ego.

Dr Jekyll and House MD?

I shouldn’t have said that; now I’m picturing Hugh Laurie in the role and have a burning desire to see the show realised.
