Sin City 2 To Get Rewrite By The Departed’s William Monahan

Should I start believing in Sin City 2 yet? I’ve been expressing cynicism for years. Perhaps my doubts became too comfortable, because I’m having trouble taking them off.

But perhaps, when I sat and watched Robert Rodriguez at Comic Con this year, promising flat-out that the film’s finances were coming together and if he was ever going to make the film, it would be this year, there really was a solid foundation to the man’s heroic self-confidence.

I guess that now William Monahan has been contracted to do a rewrite of the film’s script – previous drafts have been written by Frank Miller, the original creator of Sin City – then I should feel at least least as confident about the film’s chances of making it to the screen as I do every other in-the-works movie to crop up in my “X is writing Y” stories.

But I don’t, quite. There’s the lingering stench of years of unfulfilled promises… and the logistical problems that Rodriguez will have in getting the cast back together, even in part.

Monahan is probably best known for writing Scorsese’s The Departed, and those two guys are reuniting to develop a remake of The Gambler – a project about which, James Toback, the writer of the original Karel Reisz-directed version, really isn’t too impressed. I honestly sympathise. And I’d advise you to net a copy of the original as soon as you can, because it’s properly good.

London Boulevard, Monahan’s directorial debut, opened in the UK last year and was, to be blunt, a travesty. Sin City fans – particularly those who are giddy about the Departed connection – would be advised to check it out and temper their excitement somewhat.

So, that’s Sin City 2 making real strides forward towards the screen. Stay tuned for my next exciting post, full of revelations about the fairies who live at the bottom of my garden.
