Captain America Is Captain America … Unless You Live In Russia, South Korea Or Ukraine

When Paramount and Marvel were shipping Captain America: The First Avenger to the rest of the world, they offered up two optional titles to release it under: the classic original Captain America: The First Avenger, or the risqué, sexy alternative of simply The First Avenger. Almost all countries decided to go with the former, probably because they didn't really care and it was the first option available for ticking. However Russia, South Korea and Ukraine have all decided to go with the second option, deliberately dropping "Captain America" from the title.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, an "inside source" has cited "cultural and political reasons" as the basis for changing the title. Additionally, the film may not even be released in China since the country has a policy whereby they cannot theatrically release more than 20 foreign films per year.

What can it all mean? Anti-American sentiment? Underground Communist revolution? Limited space on cinema banners?

While you mull it over, here are some translations of "Captain America" that you can use to impress your friends.

Hungarian: Amerika Kapitány

Estonian: Kapten Ameerika

Haitian Creole: kapitèn Amerik

Portuguese: Capitão América

קאַפּיטאַן אַמעריקע   :Yiddish
